Martín Blaszko and Alicia Penalba:

Crossing Paths

Leon Tovar Gallery is pleased to present two outstanding artists: Martín Blaszko and Alicia Penalba. The featured works explore the cross-cultural dialogue found between two artists from different parts of the world with a shared interest in abstraction and experimentation with form and space. Blaszko moved to Argentina from Germany and quickly found success there, participating in numerous exhibitions throughout the country. However, his work was largely unknown outside of Argentina until the 1960s when he began to exhibit in Europe and the United States. Similarly, Penalba traveled from Argentina to Paris in 1948 and quickly became a fixture in the city's art scene. She exhibited her work extensively throughout Europe and was recognized with numerous awards for her contributions to sculpture. However, despite her international recognition, her work was not widely exhibited in Argentina until the 1980s, after she had already achieved success abroad. By showcasing both artists in the same space, our objective is to highlight the connections between Blaszko and Penalba’s artistic styles and demonstrate the importance of cultural pluralism in the development of modern art.

Despite working in different parts of the world and in distinct mediums, Blaszko and Penalba’s artistic styles share a profound interest in abstraction and experimentation with form and space. Both artists were fascinated by the interplay between light and shadow and used their chosen mediums to create works that played with the viewer's perception. Both artists have been exhibited extensively in Argentina, South America, Europe, and the United States and their works can be found in many critical public and private collections around the world.
