When the Cedar Bar Met the School of the South

With compositions suffused with mystery and hidden meaning, Marcelo Bonevardi grabbed the attention of major figures in the New York art world during the 1960s. Drawing upon the Constructivist lineage of Joaquín Torres-García and Joseph Cornell’s contemporary assemblage experiments, Bonevardi developed a hybrid form of painting and sculpture uniquely his own. In the catalogue that accompanies the artist’s debut exhibition at the Gallery, curator Susanna Temkin (El Museo del Barrio) writes on the development of the artist’s practice during his years living in New York.
