The Study Of The Labyrinth
9 Jun - 10 Aug 2026Omar Rayo’s work is widely recognized for its interwovenRead more
ribbons and striking geometric compositions. Yet to
define his practice solely through the lens of Op Art is to
overlook the profound conceptual foundation that
underlies his visual language. Far from being a purely
perceptual exercise, Rayo’s work represents a
sophisticated interpretation of the ancestral knowledge,
traditions, and cultural memory of Latin America.
The universal and timeless character of Rayo’s oeuvre
emerged not only through his engagement with
international modernism, but also through extensive
research conducted across Latin America. During this
period, the artist carefully studied the visual systems of
Indigenous cultures throughout the continent. His work
draws inspiration from the geometric incisions found in
pre-Columbian ceramics, the structural logic of Andean
textiles, and the architectural reliefs of civilizations such
as the Inca and Nazca.
For Rayo, the pre-Columbian labyrinth was not a place of
disorientation, but a symbol of spiritual inquiry and belonging.
His singular achievement lies in his ability to transform these
cultural references into a highly sophisticated geometric
language, stripping forms of anecdotal content and distilling them
into structures of remarkable rigor and modernity. -
